Duo Sonoma

Sara & Mira Gregorič

Duo Sonoma stands for a crossover of many genres, combined to create stylistically limitless, expressive and imaginative sound worlds. Their musical journey began in childhood and developed over 20 years into a unique ensemble.

Having grown up with a wide range of musical backgrounds, the two musicians are always open to new things and their enthusiasm is reflected in the different styles. Making music together has been an important part of family life since childhood and so the sisters have developed musically over 20 years and, as Duo Sonoma, have refined this unique interplay with their own sound and compositions. In 2018 they began to present their own compositions to a wider audience and gained a lot of attention in the Austrian music scene with our debut album “I”, released in spring 2021, which led to numerous invitations and coverage in the Austrian media.

As ambassadors of the Carinthian-Slovenian music and culture scene, they have already had successful concert tours at home and abroad and are part of the “New Austrian Sound of Music” (NASOM) funding program for 2025/2026. Their own compositions combine classical, jazz, Carinthian folk music and more into a harmonious whole. The non-verbal communication and the immediate sense of togetherness when making music create a unique musical dialogue. The music of Duo Sonoma is characterized by an intensive engagement with different playing techniques and sounds, which leads to a distinctive musical expression. Their composing process is characterized by an improvisational approach and the processing of personal experiences. Spontaneous ideas and emotional experiences flow into their music, often inspired by Carinthian-Slovenian melodies.

With their new album “II”, presented in July 2024, they combine classical instruments with new sounds, which contributes to a rhythmic diversity and a distinctive sound.
